Cancer symptoms
Cancer Symptoms
Cancer symptoms are the physical manifestations of the presence of cancer in the body. These symptoms can vary widely depending on the type and stage of the cancer, as well as the individual's overall health. It is important to note that many cancer symptoms can also be caused by other, less serious conditions. Therefore, experiencing these symptoms does not necessarily mean that a person has cancer. However, persistent or unusual symptoms should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Types of Cancer Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Cancer symptoms can be divided into three main categories: local symptoms, systemic symptoms, and symptoms caused by metastasis.
Local Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Local symptoms are those that occur at the site of the cancer. These symptoms can include:
- Lumps or swelling
- Pain
- Skin changes such as redness, sores that won't heal, or changes in skin color
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits
Systemic Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Systemic symptoms affect the entire body and can include:
Symptoms Caused by Metastasis[edit | edit source]
When cancer spreads, or metastasizes, it can cause additional symptoms in the parts of the body it has spread to. These symptoms can include:
- Shortness of breath or cough (if the cancer has spread to the lungs)
- Jaundice (if the cancer has spread to the liver)
- Bone pain (if the cancer has spread to the bones)
Diagnosis and Treatment[edit | edit source]
If a person is experiencing potential cancer symptoms, they should seek medical attention. The healthcare provider may order various tests, such as blood tests, imaging tests, or a biopsy, to determine the cause of the symptoms. If cancer is diagnosed, treatment options can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these.
