Carbondale is a city in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. It is known for being the home of Southern Illinois University (SIU), a major public research university.

Carbondale was founded in 1852 by Daniel Harmon Brush, John Asgill Conner, and Dr. William Richart. The city was named for the large deposits of coal in the area. Carbondale quickly grew as a center for the railroad industry and became a hub for education and commerce.
