Carl Albert
Carl Bert Albert (May 10, 1908 – February 4, 2000) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 46th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. A member of the Democratic Party, he represented Oklahoma in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1947 to 1977.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Carl Albert was born in a small coal mining town in McAlester, Oklahoma. He excelled academically, earning a scholarship to the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated with a degree in law. After his undergraduate studies, Albert was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and attended the University of Oxford, furthering his education in law and public policy.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Albert began his political career in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, where he served briefly before enlisting in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1946. Throughout his tenure in Congress, Albert was known for his expertise in legislative affairs and his ability to negotiate across party lines.
In 1971, after serving as the Majority Leader and the Majority Whip, Albert was elected as the Speaker of the House, succeeding John W. McCormack. As Speaker, he was involved in significant legislative actions during a turbulent period in American history, which included the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. His leadership was marked by efforts to reform the House and make its operations more transparent.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
After retiring from Congress in 1977, Albert returned to Oklahoma, where he engaged in various educational and philanthropic activities. He passed away in 2000 in his hometown of McAlester.
Carl Albert's contributions to American politics, particularly during his time as Speaker, are remembered for his commitment to democracy and his efforts to maintain legislative integrity during challenging times.
