Causse
Causse

---|
Causse refers to a type of limestone plateau found in the Massif Central region of France. These plateaus are characterized by their rugged terrain, sparse vegetation, and numerous karst features such as sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Causses are located primarily in the departments of Aveyron, Lozère, and Lot. The most notable of these plateaus include the Causse Méjean, Causse de Sauveterre, and Causse du Larzac. The region is known for its dramatic landscapes, which have been shaped by the dissolution of limestone over millions of years.
Geology[edit | edit source]
The Causses are part of the larger karst landscape of the Massif Central. The limestone that makes up these plateaus was deposited during the Jurassic period. Over time, the action of water has created a network of caves, sinkholes, and underground rivers. This process, known as karstification, has resulted in the unique topography of the region.
Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]
The Causses are home to a variety of plant and animal species adapted to the harsh conditions of the plateau. The vegetation is typically sparse, with grasslands, shrubs, and hardy trees such as oak and pine. The region is also home to several species of birds, reptiles, and mammals, including the Griffon vulture and the Pyrenean desman.
Human Activity[edit | edit source]
The Causses have been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological sites. The region is known for its traditional agriculture, particularly the raising of sheep for Roquefort cheese production. The rugged terrain and isolation have also made the Causses a popular destination for hiking, caving, and other outdoor activities.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
Several areas within the Causses are protected as part of the Causses and Cévennes UNESCO World Heritage Site. These protections aim to preserve the unique landscapes and biodiversity of the region while promoting sustainable tourism and agriculture.
