Charles Schepens (March 13, 1912 – March 28, 2006) was a Belgian-born American ophthalmologist, widely regarded as the "father of modern retinal surgery". His pioneering work in the field of ophthalmology has had a profound impact on the treatment of retinal detachments and other eye disorders, leading to significant advancements in both surgical techniques and patient care.

Charles Schepens was born in Mouscron, Belgium. He received his medical degree from the University of Ghent in 1935. During World War II, Schepens served as a medical officer in the Belgian Army. After the war, he moved to the United States to further his research and clinical work in ophthalmology.

Career[edit | edit source]

In the United States, Schepens joined the faculty at the Harvard Medical School and was affiliated with the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He founded the Retina Foundation (now known as the Schepens Eye Research Institute) in 1950, which has become one of the leading centers for eye research globally. Schepens developed the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, a revolutionary tool that allowed for a much more detailed and comprehensive view of the retina. This invention significantly improved the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases.

Schepens' work led to the development of new surgical techniques for repairing retinal detachments, greatly improving the success rate of these procedures. He also contributed to the understanding and treatment of various other eye conditions, including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.
