Wambebe served as the first Executive Director of the International Centre for Ethnomedicine and Drug Development (InterCEDD), where he led numerous research projects focused on the development of drugs from African medicinal plants. His work at InterCEDD has been instrumental in promoting the use of traditional African medicines in modern healthcare.

In addition to his role at InterCEDD, Wambebe has held several other notable positions. He was the first African to serve as the President of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR). He has also served as a Professor of Pharmacology at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.
