Chataamari
Chataamari[edit | edit source]
Chataamari is a traditional Nepalese dish that originates from the Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley. It is often referred to as a "Nepalese pizza" due to its appearance and method of preparation. Chataamari is a type of rice flour crepe that is typically topped with a variety of ingredients, including meat, vegetables, and spices.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
The base of chataamari is made from a batter of rice flour, water, and a pinch of salt. This batter is spread thinly on a hot, flat pan to form a crepe-like base. Once the base is partially cooked, various toppings are added. Common toppings include minced buffalo meat, chicken, or egg, along with finely chopped onions, tomatoes, coriander, and green chili peppers.
The toppings are seasoned with cumin, coriander powder, turmeric, and salt to enhance the flavor. The chataamari is then cooked until the base is crispy and the toppings are fully cooked.
Variations[edit | edit source]
Chataamari can be customized with a wide range of toppings, making it a versatile dish. Vegetarian versions are popular, using toppings such as paneer, mushrooms, and assorted vegetables. Some variations include adding cheese or lentils to the batter for additional flavor and texture.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Chataamari holds a special place in Newar culture and is often prepared during festivals and special occasions. It is a popular street food in Kathmandu and is enjoyed by people of all ages. The dish is not only a culinary delight but also a representation of the rich cultural heritage of the Newar community.
