Chen Qiushi
Chen Qiushi (Chinese: 陈秋实; born 20 October 1985) is a Chinese citizen journalist and human rights lawyer. He is known for his coverage of the Hong Kong protests in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan in 2020.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Chen was born in Sichuan province, China. He graduated from the Southwest University of Political Science & Law in Chongqing in 2008.
Career[edit | edit source]
Chen started his career as a lawyer in Beijing, specializing in human rights cases. He later turned to citizen journalism, using social media platforms to report on issues that are often censored in China.
In 2019, Chen travelled to Hong Kong to cover the anti-extradition bill protests. His reports, which were shared on YouTube and Twitter, provided a rare glimpse into the protests from a mainland Chinese perspective.
In January 2020, Chen travelled to Wuhan, the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak, to report on the situation. His reports, which included interviews with patients and footage from hospitals, were widely shared on social media. However, Chen disappeared on 6 February 2020 and has not been seen since.
Disappearance[edit | edit source]
Chen's disappearance has raised concerns about the safety of citizen journalists in China. His family has not been able to contact him, and there has been no official information about his whereabouts. His disappearance has been widely reported in international media, and several human rights organizations have called for his release.
