Chlophedianol hydrochloride

Chlophedianol hydrochloride is a non-narcotic antitussive drug that is used for the symptomatic relief of cough. It is a centrally acting cough suppressant that works by reducing the urge to cough.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Chlophedianol hydrochloride acts on the cough center in the medulla oblongata, where it suppresses the cough reflex. Its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve the stimulation of opioid receptors in the brain.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Chlophedianol hydrochloride is used in the treatment of coughs associated with conditions such as common cold, influenza, and bronchitis. It is often combined with other medications, such as expectorants and decongestants, to provide more comprehensive relief of symptoms.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all medications, chlophedianol hydrochloride can cause side effects. Common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting. Less common side effects can include dizziness, headache, and constipation.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Chlophedianol hydrochloride should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the drug. It is also contraindicated in patients with certain medical conditions, such as respiratory depression and certain types of pulmonary disease.
