Christopher J.L. Murray was born in the United States. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Harvard University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry. He then attended the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a DPhil in International Health Economics.

Murray began his career focusing on health metrics and evaluation. He has held various academic and research positions, including at the World Health Organization (WHO), where he worked on developing methods to measure health outcomes and health system performance.

In 2007, Murray joined the University of Washington as a professor and founded the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).
