Chua Soi Lek (born 2 January 1947) is a Malaysian politician and former physician. He served as the Minister of Health from 2004 to 2008 and was the President of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) from 2010 to 2014.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Chua was born in Batu Pahat, Johor, in the Malayan Union. He attended local schools before pursuing higher education at the University of Malaya, where he obtained a degree in medicine.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

Before entering politics, Chua worked as a physician. His medical background provided him with insights into the healthcare system, which later influenced his tenure as the Minister of Health.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Chua joined the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), a major component party of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Labis in Johor and served in various capacities within the party.

Minister of Health[edit | edit source]

Chua was appointed as the Minister of Health in 2004 by then-Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. During his tenure, he focused on improving the healthcare infrastructure and services in Malaysia. However, his term was cut short in 2008 due to a scandal.

MCA Presidency[edit | edit source]

In 2010, Chua was elected as the President of the Malaysian Chinese Association. He held the position until 2014, during which he worked on strengthening the party and addressing issues faced by the Malaysian Chinese community.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Chua is married to Wong Sek Hin, and they have three children, including Chua Tee Yong, who is also a politician.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Chua's political career was marred by a scandal in 2008, which led to his resignation as the Minister of Health. Despite this, he managed to make a comeback and was elected as the President of the Malaysian Chinese Association in 2010.
