Cimpa
CIMPA (Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées) is an international organization dedicated to promoting research in mathematics in developing countries. It was established in 1978 and is headquartered in Nice, France. CIMPA operates under the auspices of UNESCO and is supported by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, and other international institutions.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
CIMPA's primary objective is to foster the development of mathematical research in developing countries. It aims to achieve this by organizing research schools, workshops, and conferences, providing financial support for researchers, and facilitating international collaborations. CIMPA focuses on pure and applied mathematics, covering a wide range of topics from algebra and geometry to mathematical physics and computer science.
Activities[edit | edit source]
CIMPA organizes several types of activities to support its mission:
- Research Schools: Intensive courses held in developing countries, aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as young researchers. These schools cover various topics in mathematics and are taught by international experts.
- Workshops and Conferences: Events that bring together mathematicians from around the world to discuss recent developments in their fields and to establish new collaborations.
- Collaborative Research Projects: Initiatives that support joint research projects between mathematicians from developing countries and their counterparts in developed countries.
- Grants and Scholarships: Financial assistance provided to young researchers from developing countries to attend conferences, workshops, and research schools.
Governance[edit | edit source]
CIMPA is governed by a Board of Directors, which includes representatives from its supporting institutions and the international mathematical community. The Board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization and overseeing its activities. The day-to-day operations of CIMPA are managed by an Executive Director, who is appointed by the Board.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Since its inception, CIMPA has played a significant role in advancing mathematical research in developing countries. It has helped to build local research capacity, fostered international collaborations, and provided opportunities for young researchers to engage with the global mathematical community. CIMPA's activities have contributed to the growth of mathematical knowledge and its applications in various fields, including science, engineering, and technology.
