Citrus ×volkameriana

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Citrus ×volkameriana, also known as Volkamer lemon, is a citrus species that is a complex hybrid, predominantly composed of pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata). It is named after the German botanist, Johann Volkamer, who first described the species in the 18th century.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Citrus ×volkameriana is a small to medium-sized tree that typically grows to a height of 3-6 meters. The leaves are dark green, glossy, and larger than those of most other citrus species. The flowers are white and fragrant, and the fruit is round to slightly oblong, with a rough, thick rind that is bright orange when ripe. The pulp is juicy and acidic, with a strong, distinctive flavor.

Cultivation and uses[edit | edit source]

Citrus ×volkameriana is cultivated primarily for its fruit, which is used in cooking and for making beverages. The fruit's high acid content makes it ideal for use in marinades and salad dressings, and its zest is often used to add flavor to baked goods and desserts. The juice is also used in the production of lemonade and other beverages.

In addition to its culinary uses, Citrus ×volkameriana is also used in traditional medicine. The fruit's high vitamin C content makes it a popular remedy for scurvy, and its juice is often used as a treatment for throat infections and other respiratory ailments.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Citrus ×volkameriana is native to Southeast Asia, but is now cultivated in many parts of the world, including the Mediterranean region, South America, and the southern United States. It prefers a warm, sunny climate and well-drained soil.
