The coat of arms of Burkina Faso was adopted in 1997. It features a shield with the national flag of Burkina Faso and two white stallions on either side. The national motto, "Unité, Progrès, Justice" (Unity, Progress, Justice), is displayed on a banner below the shield.

Design[edit | edit source]

The coat of arms consists of a shield with the national flag of Burkina Faso, which is divided horizontally into two equal parts. The upper part is red, and the lower part is green, with a yellow five-pointed star in the center. The shield is supported by two white stallions, which symbolize the strength and endurance of the people of Burkina Faso.

Above the shield, there is a scroll with the name of the country, "Burkina Faso." Below the shield, another scroll bears the national motto: "Unité, Progrès, Justice."

Symbolism[edit | edit source]

  • The red color represents the revolutionary struggle and the sacrifices made by the people.
  • The green color symbolizes the abundance of agricultural and natural resources.
  • The yellow star stands for the guiding light of the revolution.
  • The white stallions represent purity and the noble spirit of the people.

Historical Background[edit | edit source]

The current coat of arms replaced an earlier version that was used from 1984 to 1997, which featured a more revolutionary design with a crossed mattock and sword, symbolizing the agricultural and military aspects of the country.
