Coat of arms of Vestfold
Coat of arms of Vestfold was the official heraldic symbol representing Vestfold, a former county in Norway. The coat of arms was granted on 15 January 1970. The county of Vestfold merged with Telemark on 1 January 2020, forming the new county of Vestfold og Telemark, and thus the coat of arms is no longer in official use.
Description[edit | edit source]
The coat of arms featured a golden Viking ship on a blue background, symbolizing Vestfold's rich Viking Age history and its importance as a maritime region. The Viking ship, often associated with exploration, trade, and naval power, reflects the historical significance of the area as a center for shipbuilding and as the starting point for many Viking voyages. The blue color represents the sea, which has been vital for the region's development and prosperity.
Historical Significance[edit | edit source]
Vestfold has been a central area in Norway's history, especially during the Viking Age. It is home to important archaeological sites such as Oseberg, Gokstad, and Kaupang, which are crucial for understanding Norway's Viking heritage. The choice of a Viking ship as the central element in the coat of arms pays homage to this rich historical background.
Legal and Ceremonial Use[edit | edit source]
Before the merger, the coat of arms was used by the county administration to represent Vestfold in official contexts, including documents, flags, and promotional materials. It also appeared in various public spaces and on items related to the county's services and administration.
Merger and Current Status[edit | edit source]
With the administrative reform in Norway, which reduced the number of counties, Vestfold merged with Telemark to form Vestfold og Telemark. The new county adopted a new coat of arms, and the coat of arms of Vestfold ceased to be officially used from 2020 onwards. The new emblem represents a blend of features from both Vestfold and Telemark's historical symbols.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Although no longer in official use, the coat of arms of Vestfold remains a symbol of the region's identity and history. It is preserved in historical records, local museums, and by those with a personal or scholarly interest in heraldry and regional symbols.
