Coelacanth
Coelacanth (Latimeria) is a rare order of fish that belongs to the ancient lineage known as the Sarcopterygii, or lobe-finned fishes. The discovery of the first living coelacanth in 1938 off the coast of South Africa was a significant zoological find, as these creatures were previously believed to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period, over 65 million years ago. This discovery has provided invaluable insights into the evolutionary history of vertebrates, including the transition from sea to land animals.

The coelacanth is characterized by its lobed pectoral and pelvic fins, which move in a similar fashion to the legs of terrestrial animals. Coelacanths are found in the Indian Ocean, specifically around the Comoros Islands, along the east coast of Africa, and in Indonesian waters. Their nocturnal nature and preference for deep water have contributed to their elusiveness and the difficulty in studying them in their natural habitat.

Coelacanths are carnivorous, feeding on smaller fish and cephalopods. They have a unique method of swimming, known as "drift hunting," where they use their lobed fins to navigate and maintain a stationary position while waiting for prey. This reproductive strategy is rare among fish and adds another layer of interest to their study.

The coelacanth is classified as "Critically Endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
