Cough Drop

A cough drop (also known as a throat lozenge, cough sweet, cough candy, or sore throat lozenge) is a small, typically medicated tablet intended to be dissolved slowly in the mouth to temporarily stop coughs and soothe irritated throats.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of a cough drop dates back to ancient Egypt, where they were made from honey flavored with citrus, herbs, and spices. In the 19th century, the modern form of cough drops, containing medicinal ingredients, was developed.

Ingredients[edit | edit source]

Common ingredients in cough drops include menthol, eucalyptus oil, mint, and honey. Some cough drops may also contain dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant, or benzocaine, a local anesthetic.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Cough drops work by increasing saliva production, which can soothe a sore or irritated throat. The active ingredients, such as menthol, can also numb the throat, reducing the cough reflex.

Brands[edit | edit source]

There are many brands of cough drops available, including Halls, Ricola, and Luden's.
