Creatine-alpha ketoglutarate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Creatine-alpha ketoglutarate (Cr-AKG) is a nutritional supplement used primarily by athletes and bodybuilders to enhance muscle growth and improve physical performance. It is a combination of the amino acid creatine and alpha-ketoglutarate, a key molecule in the Krebs cycle.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Creatine is a naturally occurring amino acid that's found in meat and fish, and also made by the human body in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. It is converted into creatine phosphate or phosphocreatine and stored in the muscles, where it is used for energy. During high-intensity, short-duration exercise, such as lifting weights or sprinting, phosphocreatine is converted into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a major source of energy within the human body.

Alpha-ketoglutarate is a key molecule in the Krebs cycle, making it an important molecule in the body's production of energy. It is also involved in amino acid synthesis and protein synthesis.

When combined, creatine and alpha-ketoglutarate form a compound that is more easily absorbed by the body than creatine alone. This increased absorption may lead to greater improvements in strength, recovery, and lean muscle mass.

Benefits[edit | edit source]

Creatine-alpha ketoglutarate is believed to have several benefits, including:

  • Increased muscle mass: By increasing the body's ATP levels, Cr-AKG may help increase muscle size and strength.
  • Improved performance: Cr-AKG may enhance athletic performance by providing the muscles with more energy during intense workouts.
  • Faster recovery: By replenishing ATP levels, Cr-AKG may help muscles recover more quickly after exercise.
  • Enhanced protein synthesis: Alpha-ketoglutarate is involved in the synthesis of amino acids and proteins, which are essential for muscle growth and repair.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all supplements, creatine-alpha ketoglutarate may have potential side effects. These can include nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and muscle cramps. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
