Cyhalothrin

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Cyhalothrin is a type of pyrethroid insecticide that is commonly used in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings. It is a synthetic compound that is designed to mimic the insecticidal properties of the natural compound pyrethrin, which is derived from the flowers of certain species of Chrysanthemum.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

Cyhalothrin is a complex organic compound with the chemical formula C23H19ClF3NO3. It is a member of the halogenated pyrethroids, which are characterized by the presence of a halogen atom (in this case, chlorine) in their chemical structure.

Mode of Action[edit | edit source]

Cyhalothrin works by disrupting the normal functioning of the nervous system in insects. It does this by interfering with the normal operation of voltage-gated sodium channels, which are essential for the transmission of nerve impulses. This leads to rapid paralysis and death of the insect.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Cyhalothrin is used in a wide variety of applications, including agriculture, home pest control, and public health programs. In agriculture, it is used to control a wide range of pests, including aphids, caterpillars, beetles, and mites. In home pest control, it is used to control insects such as cockroaches, ants, and spiders. In public health programs, it is used to control disease-carrying insects such as mosquitoes and ticks.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Like all pyrethroids, cyhalothrin is toxic to insects but is generally safe for humans and other mammals when used properly. However, it can cause skin and eye irritation, and prolonged or excessive exposure can lead to more serious health effects.

Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

Cyhalothrin is highly toxic to aquatic organisms and bees. It is also persistent in the environment, which means it can accumulate in soil and water bodies over time.
