From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

DPT-Hib vaccine is a combination immunization that protects against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib).

Overview[edit | edit source]

The DPT-Hib vaccine is a combination of vaccines that are administered together to protect against four different diseases: diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). These diseases can be serious and potentially life-threatening, particularly in young children.

Diseases Covered[edit | edit source]

Diphtheria[edit | edit source]

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that affects the mucous membranes of the throat and nose. If left untreated, it can cause severe damage to the heart, kidneys, and nervous system.

Pertussis[edit | edit source]

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is characterized by severe coughing spells that can make it hard for a child to eat, drink, or even breathe.

Tetanus[edit | edit source]

Tetanus, also known as lockjaw, is a serious bacterial infection that causes painful muscle stiffness and spasms. It can lead to serious health problems, including difficulty swallowing and breathing.

Haemophilus influenzae type b[edit | edit source]

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a bacterium that can cause a variety of serious infections, including meningitis, pneumonia, and sepsis. It is particularly dangerous for children under the age of 5.

Vaccine Administration[edit | edit source]

The DPT-Hib vaccine is typically given in a series of shots starting at 2 months of age. The vaccine is usually given in the thigh or upper arm. The typical schedule is at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and then a booster between 15 and 18 months.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all vaccines, the DPT-Hib vaccine can cause side effects. These are usually mild and go away on their own. Common side effects include redness, swelling, or tenderness where the shot was given, fever, and fussiness.
