Danisco A/S was a Danish food ingredients company that specialized in the production of enzymes, biotechnology, and other food-related products. Founded in 1989, Danisco quickly became a significant player in the global food industry, providing essential ingredients for a wide range of food products.
History[edit | edit source]
Danisco was established in 1989 through the merger of Danish Sugar (Dansk Sukker) and Finnish company Cultor. The company expanded its operations by acquiring several other businesses in the food ingredients sector, including the British company, Genencor, which specialized in enzymes and biotechnology.
In 2011, Danisco was acquired by the American conglomerate DuPont, which integrated Danisco's operations into its own DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences division. This acquisition allowed DuPont to enhance its capabilities in the food ingredients and biotechnology sectors.
Products and Services[edit | edit source]
Danisco's product portfolio included a wide range of food ingredients and solutions, such as:
- Enzymes: Used in various food processing applications to improve texture, flavor, and shelf life.
- Cultures: Microbial cultures for dairy products, meat, and other fermented foods.
- Emulsifiers: Ingredients that help blend and stabilize mixtures of oil and water.
- Sweeteners: Both natural and artificial sweeteners for various food and beverage applications.
- Texturants: Ingredients that modify the texture and mouthfeel of food products.
Research and Development[edit | edit source]
Danisco was known for its strong focus on research and development (R&D). The company invested heavily in developing innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of the food industry. Danisco's R&D efforts were aimed at improving food quality, safety, and sustainability.
Acquisition by DuPont[edit | edit source]
In January 2011, DuPont announced its intention to acquire Danisco for $6.3 billion. The acquisition was completed in May 2011, and Danisco's operations were integrated into DuPont's Nutrition & Biosciences division. This acquisition allowed DuPont to expand its presence in the food ingredients market and leverage Danisco's expertise in enzymes and biotechnology.
