Darmstadt is a city in the state of Hesse, Germany, located in the southern part of the Rhine-Main area. It is known for its rich cultural heritage, scientific contributions, and as a center of the chemical industry.

Darmstadt was first mentioned in the 11th century as a small village. It gained city rights in 1330. The city became the capital of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1567. During the 19th century, Darmstadt became a center of the Art Nouveau movement, particularly with the establishment of the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony.
