Dave Sharma
Dave Sharma (born 21 December 1975) is an Australian politician and former diplomat. He is a member of the Liberal Party of Australia and served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the division of Wentworth in the House of Representatives from 2019 to 2022.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Sharma was born in Vancouver, Canada, to an Indian father and an Australian mother. He moved to Sydney at a young age. He attended Turramurra High School and later graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in law. He also holds a Master of International Relations from the University of Sydney.
Diplomatic Career[edit | edit source]
Sharma joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in 1999. He held various positions within DFAT, including postings in Papua New Guinea and Washington, D.C.. In 2013, he was appointed as the Australian Ambassador to Israel, becoming one of the youngest individuals to hold such a position. During his tenure, he worked on strengthening the bilateral relations between Australia and Israel.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
In 2018, Sharma was preselected by the Liberal Party to contest the by-election for the division of Wentworth, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Although he narrowly lost the by-election to independent candidate Kerryn Phelps, he successfully contested the seat in the 2019 federal election.
As an MP, Sharma focused on issues such as foreign policy, national security, and economic reform. He served on several parliamentary committees, including the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Sharma is married to Rachel Lord, and they have three children. He is known for his interest in technology and innovation, and he has been an advocate for policies supporting the tech industry in Australia.
