David Serwadda
David Serwadda is a prominent Ugandan epidemiologist and public health expert. He is best known for his significant contributions to HIV/AIDS research and prevention in Uganda and globally.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Serwadda was born in Uganda. He completed his MBChB at Makerere University, one of the most prestigious universities in Africa. He later pursued further studies in public health and epidemiology, earning a MPH from the University of California, Berkeley and a MD from Case Western Reserve University.
Career[edit]
Serwadda's career has been marked by his dedication to HIV/AIDS research. He was one of the founding investigators of the Rakai Health Sciences Program, a collaborative biomedical research and service delivery organization. His work in Rakai, a district in southern Uganda, has been instrumental in understanding the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS and developing effective prevention strategies.
In addition to his research, Serwadda has held numerous leadership positions. He served as the Dean of the Makerere University School of Public Health from 2007 to 2017. He has also been a member of several international advisory boards, including the WHO HIV/AIDS Research Advisory Committee and the NIH Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council.
Contributions to HIV/AIDS Research[edit]
Serwadda's research has significantly advanced our understanding of HIV/AIDS. His work has included studies on the modes of HIV transmission, the impact of HIV on communities, and the effectiveness of various prevention strategies. He has been involved in landmark studies that demonstrated the efficacy of male circumcision in reducing HIV transmission and the role of antiretroviral therapy in preventing HIV transmission among serodiscordant couples.
Awards and Recognition[edit]
In recognition of his contributions to HIV/AIDS research, Serwadda has received numerous awards and honors. These include the Prince Mahidol Award for outstanding contributions to the field of medicine and the HIV/AIDS Leadership Award from the WHO.
