Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Dean Hamer was born in Montclair, New Jersey. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College (Connecticut) and his Ph.D. from the Harvard Medical School in 1977.

The "Gay Gene"[edit | edit source]

In 1993, Hamer and his colleagues published a study in the journal Science suggesting a link between a region on the X chromosome and male sexual orientation. This study sparked widespread interest and controversy, leading to further research and debate on the genetic basis of sexual orientation.

The "God Gene"[edit | edit source]

In 2004, Hamer published the book The God Gene: How Faith is Hardwired into our Genes, in which he proposed that a specific gene, VMAT2, is associated with spirituality and the tendency to have mystical experiences. This hypothesis has been both supported and criticized by various researchers in the field.

In addition to his scientific work, Hamer has also ventured into filmmaking. He co-directed and produced several documentaries, including Out in the Silence, which explores the challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals in rural America.
