Deep lingual vein
Deep Lingual Vein
The Deep Lingual Vein is a blood vessel located in the human mouth. It is responsible for draining blood from the tongue and is often visible on the underside of the tongue.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The deep lingual vein begins at the apex of the tongue and runs along the tongue's underside, close to the midline. It drains into the lingual vein, which in turn drains into the internal jugular vein. The deep lingual vein is accompanied along its course by the deep lingual artery.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
The deep lingual vein is often visible in the mouth and can be used as a landmark in oral examinations. It may become enlarged or varicose in certain conditions, such as portal hypertension.
