Democrats Abroad is the official organization of the Democratic Party for United States citizens living outside the United States. It is recognized as a "state" party by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and is responsible for representing American Democrats living abroad.
History[edit | edit source]
Democrats Abroad was founded in 1964 by a group of Americans living in London and Paris. The organization was created to provide a voice for Democrats living outside the United States and to ensure their participation in the American political process. Over the years, Democrats Abroad has grown to include members in over 190 countries around the world.
Structure[edit | edit source]
Democrats Abroad is organized into country committees, which are equivalent to state parties in the United States. Each country committee is responsible for organizing activities and events for Democrats living in that country. The organization is governed by an International Executive Committee, which is elected by the members of Democrats Abroad.
Country Committees[edit | edit source]
Country committees are the backbone of Democrats Abroad. They organize events, voter registration drives, and other activities to engage Americans living abroad. Some of the largest country committees are in countries with significant American expatriate populations, such as Germany, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Global Primary[edit | edit source]
Democrats Abroad holds a "Global Primary" to allow its members to vote in the Democratic presidential primary. This primary is conducted in person at voting centers around the world and via mail and email. The results of the Global Primary determine the allocation of delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
Activities[edit | edit source]
Democrats Abroad engages in a variety of activities to support the Democratic Party and its candidates. These activities include:
- Voter Registration: Democrats Abroad conducts voter registration drives to ensure that Americans living abroad can vote in U.S. elections.
- Advocacy: The organization advocates for issues important to Americans living abroad, such as tax fairness and voting rights.
- Events: Democrats Abroad hosts events such as debate watch parties, policy discussions, and social gatherings to engage its members.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in Democrats Abroad is open to any U.S. citizen living outside the United States who supports the Democratic Party. Members can join their local country committee and participate in activities and events.
Importance[edit | edit source]
Democrats Abroad plays a crucial role in mobilizing American voters living abroad. With millions of Americans living outside the United States, the organization helps ensure that their voices are heard in U.S. elections. The votes of Americans abroad can be pivotal in close elections, making the work of Democrats Abroad vital to the Democratic Party's success.
