Derby pie

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Derby Pie is a chocolate and walnut tart in a pie shell with a pastry dough crust. It is often associated with the Kentucky Derby.

History[edit | edit source]

The Derby Pie was created by the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky as a specialty pastry. The pie was created in 1950 by the inn's owners, Walter and Leaudra Kern. They were assisted by their son George Kern. The family claims that the Derby Pie name was chosen by drawing from a hat.

Ingredients and Preparation[edit | edit source]

The Derby Pie consists of a blend of chocolate and walnut filling, along with other ingredients such as sugar, corn syrup, and bourbon. The mixture is combined and poured into a pie shell, then baked until the filling sets.

Trademark Controversy[edit | edit source]

The name "Derby Pie" is a registered trademark of Kern's Kitchen, the company that originally created the pie. The company has been involved in several legal disputes over the name, asserting that other pies using the name are infringing on their trademark.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

The Derby Pie is often associated with the Kentucky Derby, and is a popular dessert in the southern United States, particularly in Kentucky. It is often served at Derby parties and other festive occasions.
