Dharwad peda
Dharwad Peda is a popular sweet delicacy from the Indian state of Karnataka, specifically from the city of Dharwad. This sweet treat is made from milk that has been condensed and sweetened. It is known for its soft texture and unique taste, which is a blend of sweet and slightly sour. The Dharwad Peda has a rich history and is an integral part of the culinary culture of Karnataka.
History[edit | edit source]
The history of Dharwad Peda dates back to more than 175 years. It is believed to have been first made by the Thakur family, who migrated to Dharwad from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. The recipe has been passed down through generations and is a closely guarded secret. The Thakur family still runs a shop in Dharwad, known as the Line Bazaar Peda Shop, which is famous for its authentic Dharwad Peda.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
The preparation of Dharwad Peda involves a lengthy process. The main ingredient is milk, which is boiled and stirred continuously until it condenses into a thick consistency. Sugar is then added to the condensed milk and the mixture is allowed to cool. Once cooled, the mixture is shaped into small, flat discs and coated with a layer of powdered sugar.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
Dharwad Peda is not just a sweet treat, but also a cultural symbol of Dharwad and Karnataka. It is often served during festivals and special occasions. The sweet has also gained recognition outside Karnataka and is popular across India.
Geographical Indication[edit | edit source]
In 2019, Dharwad Peda was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India. This means that only the pedas made in Dharwad can be called Dharwad Peda, thereby protecting the authenticity and uniqueness of this sweet.
