Dixi Crosby 1870

Dixi Crosby (February 8, 1800 – September 26, 1873) was a prominent American surgeon and educator in the 19th century. He is best known for his contributions to surgery and his role as a professor at the Dartmouth Medical School.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Dixi Crosby was born in Sandwich, New Hampshire. He pursued his early education in local schools before attending Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 1824. Following his undergraduate studies, Crosby enrolled in the Dartmouth Medical School, earning his medical degree in 1827.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical education, Crosby began practicing medicine in Gilmanton, New Hampshire. He quickly gained a reputation for his surgical skills and was soon invited to join the faculty at Dartmouth Medical School. In 1838, he was appointed as a professor of surgery and obstetrics, a position he held until his death in 1873.

Crosby was known for his innovative surgical techniques and his dedication to medical education. He was a pioneer in the use of ether as an anesthetic and contributed significantly to the development of surgical procedures in the United States.
