Don Chipp

Don Chipp (21 August 1925 – 28 August 2006) was an Australian politician and the founder of the Australian Democrats. He served as a member of the Australian House of Representatives and later as a Senator.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Don Chipp was born in Melbourne, Victoria. He attended Northcote High School and later studied at the University of Melbourne, where he earned a degree in commerce.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Chipp began his political career as a member of the Liberal Party of Australia. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1960, representing the seat of Higinbotham. He held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Customs and Excise and Minister for Tourism and Recreation.

Formation of the Australian Democrats[edit | edit source]

In 1977, disillusioned with the direction of the Liberal Party, Chipp left and founded the Australian Democrats. The party aimed to "keep the bastards honest," a phrase that became synonymous with Chipp and the Democrats. He served as the party's first leader and was elected to the Senate in 1977.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Chipp retired from politics in 1986 but remained active in public life. He authored several books and continued to advocate for political reform. Don Chipp passed away on 28 August 2006.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Chipp was married twice and had five children. He was known for his passion for Australian rules football and was a lifelong supporter of the Melbourne Football Club.
