Ecadotril

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Ecadotril is a neprilysin inhibitor that was developed by Sanofi-Aventis. It is used in the treatment of heart failure and hypertension. Ecadotril is a prodrug that is metabolized into the active metabolite sinorphan in the body.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Ecadotril is a prodrug that is metabolized into the active metabolite sinorphan in the body. Sinorphan is a potent and selective inhibitor of neprilysin, an enzyme that degrades natriuretic peptides, bradykinin, and adrenomedullin. By inhibiting neprilysin, sinorphan increases the levels of these peptides, leading to increased vasodilation, natriuresis, and diuresis.

Clinical use[edit | edit source]

Ecadotril has been studied for the treatment of heart failure and hypertension. In clinical trials, it has been shown to improve symptoms and reduce hospitalizations in patients with heart failure. However, its use in hypertension is less well established.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

The most common side effects of ecadotril are dizziness, headache, and cough. Less common side effects include hypotension, hyperkalemia, and renal impairment.
