Edmund Kalau
Edmund Kalau (1928–2014) was a German missionary and aviator known for his significant contributions to the spread of Christianity and the development of aviation in Micronesia. He was the founder of the Lutheran Church in Micronesia and played a crucial role in establishing the Lutheran Church of Guam.

Edmund Kalau was born in Germany in 1928. He grew up during a tumultuous period marked by World War II and its aftermath. His early experiences in war-torn Germany influenced his later commitment to humanitarian and missionary work.
Missionary Work[edit | edit source]
In the 1950s, Kalau felt a calling to become a missionary. He joined the Lutheran Church and was sent to Micronesia to spread the Christian faith. He arrived in Chuuk, one of the states in the Federated States of Micronesia, where he began his missionary activities.

Kalau's efforts led to the establishment of the Lutheran Church in Micronesia. He worked tirelessly to build churches, schools, and community centers, providing both spiritual guidance and practical support to the local population. Recognizing the challenges of transportation in the scattered islands of Micronesia, Kalau learned to fly and became an aviator. He founded Pacific Missionary Aviation (PMA) in 1974, an organization dedicated to providing air transportation for medical emergencies, missionary work, and community support across the islands. PMA played a vital role in connecting remote communities and delivering essential services.

Edmund Kalau continued his missionary and aviation work until his retirement. He passed away in 2014, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication. His contributions to the Lutheran Church and aviation in Micronesia are remembered and celebrated by the communities he served.
