Edson B. Olds

Edson Baldwin Olds (June 3, 1802 – January 24, 1869) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Ohio. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Edson B. Olds was born in Marlboro, Vermont. He pursued classical studies and graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He studied medicine and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical education, Olds began practicing medicine in Kingston, Ohio. He later moved to Circleville, Ohio, where he continued his medical practice.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Olds entered politics as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, serving from 1837 to 1838. He was then elected to the Ohio State Senate, where he served from 1842 to 1844.

In 1848, Olds was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives, representing Ohio's 9th congressional district. He served in the Thirty-first, Thirty-second, and Thirty-third Congresses from March 4, 1849, to March 3, 1855. During his tenure, he was known for his advocacy of states' rights and his opposition to the Compromise of 1850.

Later life and death[edit | edit source]

After his congressional service, Olds returned to his medical practice in Circleville. He remained active in local politics and community affairs until his death on January 24, 1869. He was interred in Forest Cemetery in Circleville.

Edson B. Olds is remembered for his contributions to both medicine and politics in Ohio. His career exemplifies the 19th-century American tradition of public service by professionals from various fields.
