Ehrenfelser is a white grape variety that is a cross between the Riesling and Silvaner grape varieties. It was created in Germany in the mid-20th century by grape breeder Dr. Heinrich Birk at the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute. The grape is named after the Ehrenfels Castle, which is located near the town of Rüdesheim in the Rheingau wine region of Germany.

History[edit | edit source]

The Ehrenfelser grape variety was first bred in 1929 by Dr. Heinrich Birk, who was a renowned grape breeder at the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute in Germany. Birk aimed to create a grape variety that combined the aromatic qualities of Riesling with the early ripening characteristics of Silvaner. After several years of experimentation, he successfully crossed Riesling and Silvaner, resulting in the creation of Ehrenfelser.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Ehrenfelser grapes are known for their aromatic qualities, similar to Riesling. They have a distinct floral and fruity aroma, often described as having notes of apricot, peach, and honey. The grapes have a medium to high acidity, which contributes to the wine's refreshing and crisp character.

The wines produced from Ehrenfelser grapes are typically off-dry to medium-sweet, with a balanced sweetness and acidity. They are known for their vibrant flavors and can exhibit a range of characteristics depending on the winemaking techniques used. Ehrenfelser wines are often enjoyed young, as they are known for their freshness and lively nature.

Cultivation and Regions[edit | edit source]

Ehrenfelser is primarily grown in Germany, particularly in the Rheingau and Rheinhessen wine regions. It is also cultivated in small quantities in other countries such as Canada, where it is grown in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia.

The grape variety is well-suited to cool climate regions, as it has good resistance to frost and can ripen early. It thrives in well-drained soils and benefits from ample sunlight exposure. The Ehrenfelser vines are vigorous and require regular pruning to maintain their health and productivity.

Notable Wines[edit | edit source]

Ehrenfelser is often used as a blending grape in Germany, where it is combined with other aromatic varieties such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer to create unique and flavorful wines. It is also occasionally produced as a varietal wine, showcasing its distinct characteristics.

Some notable Ehrenfelser wines include:

  • Example Winery Ehrenfelser - A medium-sweet wine with pronounced floral and fruity aromas, produced in the Rheingau region of Germany.
  • Example Winery Ehrenfelser Icewine - A luscious and sweet dessert wine made from frozen Ehrenfelser grapes, produced in the Okanagan Valley of Canada.
