Ehrenfelser is a white grape variety used in the production of wine. It was developed in 1929 at the Geisenheim Grape Breeding Institute in the Rheingau region of Germany. The grape is a cross between Riesling and a Silvaner clone known as "Österreichisch Weiss". Ehrenfelser is primarily grown in Germany and Canada, with smaller plantings in other wine-producing regions.

History[edit | edit source]

The Ehrenfelser grape was created by Dr. Heinrich Birk at the Geisenheim Institute, which is renowned for its research and development of new grape varieties. The aim was to produce a grape that could thrive in the cooler climates of Germany while retaining the desirable characteristics of Riesling, such as its aromatic profile and acidity.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Ehrenfelser vines are known for their hardiness and ability to ripen earlier than Riesling, making them suitable for regions with shorter growing seasons. The grape clusters are medium-sized, and the berries are small and round with a greenish-yellow hue. The vines are moderately vigorous and can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis bunch rot, but they generally exhibit good resistance to other common vine diseases.

Wine characteristics[edit | edit source]

Ehrenfelser wines are often aromatic, with floral and fruity notes reminiscent of Riesling. Common flavor profiles include peach, apricot, and citrus, with a balanced acidity that makes the wine refreshing and lively. The wines can range from dry to sweet, and they are typically consumed young to enjoy their fresh and vibrant character.

Regions[edit | edit source]

Germany[edit | edit source]

In Germany, Ehrenfelser is primarily grown in the Rheingau and Mosel regions. The grape's ability to ripen earlier than Riesling makes it a valuable variety in these cooler areas, where achieving full ripeness can be challenging.

Canada[edit | edit source]

Ehrenfelser has found a successful home in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. The region's warm days and cool nights provide ideal conditions for producing high-quality Ehrenfelser wines. Canadian winemakers often produce Ehrenfelser in a range of styles, from dry to off-dry, highlighting the grape's versatility.
