Ellagic acid

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Ellagic acid is a natural phenol antioxidant found in numerous fruits and vegetables. The antiproliferative and antioxidant properties of ellagic acid have spurred preliminary research into the potential health benefits of ellagic acid consumption.

Sources[edit | edit source]

Ellagic acid is found in oak species such as the North American white oak (Quercus alba) and European red oak (Quercus robur). The macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum produces ellagic acid.

Fruits and nuts including pomegranates, walnuts, raspberries, strawberries, and grapes also contain ellagic acid.

Potential health benefits[edit | edit source]

Ellagic acid has been marketed as a dietary supplement with a range of claimed benefits against cancer, heart disease, and other medical conditions. However, these claims have not been proven in high-quality clinical research and are largely based on in vitro studies.
