Elon Reeve Musk (born June 28, 1971) is a South African-born American business magnate, industrial designer, and engineer. He is the founder, CEO, and lead designer of SpaceX; early investor, CEO, and product architect of Tesla Motors; founder of The Boring Company; and co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI. In 2022, Musk acquired social media company Twitter.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Musk was born to a Canadian mother and South African father and raised in Pretoria, South Africa. He attended the University of Pretoria before moving to Canada at age 17 to attend Queen's University. He transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received dual bachelor's degrees in economics and physics.

Business career[edit | edit source]

Zip2 and PayPal[edit | edit source]

Musk co-founded his first company, Zip2, with his brother Kimbal in 1995. The company, which provided business directories and maps for newspapers, was sold to Compaq for $307 million in 1999. Musk then founded X.com, an online payment company, in 1999, which later became PayPal and was acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.

SpaceX[edit | edit source]

In 2002, Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, with the goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars. SpaceX developed the Falcon 1, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship rockets, and the Dragon spacecraft.

Tesla Motors[edit | edit source]

Musk joined Tesla Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer, in 2004, the year after it was founded. He became its CEO and product architect, leading it from a startup to a producer of the widely popular Tesla Roadster, Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y.

The Boring Company[edit | edit source]

In 2016, Musk founded The Boring Company to develop tunneling and infrastructure technology, aiming to reduce traffic congestion in cities.

Neuralink and OpenAI[edit | edit source]

Musk co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company, in 2016, to integrate the human brain with artificial intelligence. He also co-founded OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research lab, in 2015.
