Embarrassment

Embarrassment is a self-conscious emotion dictated by a disconnect between how we feel we should respond or act in public and how we actually respond or act. We are most likely to be embarrassed when we believe we have not lived up to what society asks of us or when we are on the receiving end of undesired attention.

Causes of Embarrassment[edit | edit source]

Embarrassment can be brought on by many factors, most commonly when an individual's personal space or privacy is violated or when one's actions are considered unacceptable by society. Other causes can include a sudden focus of attention on an individual or when an individual's performance fails to meet a standard or expectation.

Effects of Embarrassment[edit | edit source]

Embarrassment can cause a number of physical effects, including blushing, sweating, stuttering, nervousness, and anxiety. It can also lead to feelings of shame or guilt.

Coping with Embarrassment[edit | edit source]

There are several strategies for coping with embarrassment. These include humor, apology, and avoidance. It is also helpful to remember that everyone experiences embarrassment and it is a normal part of human experience.
