Emblem of the Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic
Emblem of the Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic
The Emblem of the Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was the official symbol of the Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Adjarian ASSR), a part of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. The emblem was used from the establishment of the Adjarian ASSR in 1921 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Design and Symbolism[edit | edit source]
The emblem of the Adjarian ASSR was based on the emblem of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, which in turn was inspired by the State Emblem of the Soviet Union. The emblem featured several elements that were common in Soviet heraldry, symbolizing the unity of the workers and peasants, as well as the natural resources and economic activities of the region.
Elements[edit | edit source]
- Red Star: The red star at the top of the emblem represented the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the victory of socialism.
- Hammer and Sickle: The hammer and sickle were symbols of the unity of the industrial workers and the peasants.
- Sunrise: The rising sun symbolized the future of the Soviet people and the bright future of socialism.
- Wheat and Grapes: The wheat and grapes represented the agricultural wealth of the Adjarian ASSR.
- Mountains: The mountains depicted in the emblem symbolized the geographical features of the region, particularly the Caucasus Mountains.
Inscriptions[edit | edit source]
The emblem included inscriptions in both Georgian and Russian. The Georgian inscription read "აჭარის ასსრ" (Ach'aris ASSR), and the Russian inscription read "Аджарская АССР" (Adzharskaya ASSR). These inscriptions identified the emblem as belonging to the Adjarian ASSR.
Historical Context[edit | edit source]
The Adjarian ASSR was established in 1921 as an autonomous region within the Georgian SSR. The creation of the emblem was part of the broader Soviet policy of granting certain regions autonomy while maintaining overall control from the central government in Moscow. The emblem was used on official documents, government buildings, and other state-related materials.
Dissolution[edit | edit source]
With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Adjarian ASSR was transformed into the Autonomous Republic of Adjara within the newly independent Republic of Georgia. The emblem of the Adjarian ASSR was replaced by new symbols that reflected the region's new status and the national identity of Georgia.
