Eric Chivian
Eric Chivian is an American physician, biologist, and environmentalist. He is best known for his work in raising awareness about the health effects of nuclear war and climate change. Chivian is a co-founder of the organization International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Eric Chivian was born in New York City. He attended Harvard College, where he earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry. He then went on to receive his M.D. from Harvard Medical School.
Career[edit | edit source]
Chivian began his career as a psychiatrist and later transitioned into environmental health. He has held various academic positions, including at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.
International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War[edit | edit source]
In 1980, Chivian co-founded the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) along with Bernard Lown and others. The organization aimed to educate the public and policymakers about the medical consequences of nuclear war. In 1985, IPPNW was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts.
Center for Health and the Global Environment[edit | edit source]
Chivian founded the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School in 1996. The center focuses on the links between human health and global environmental changes. Under his leadership, the center has produced numerous reports and educational materials on topics such as biodiversity and climate change.
