Eric Morecambe (14 May 1926 – 28 May 1984) was an English comedian who, together with Ernie Wise, formed the double act Morecambe and Wise. The partnership lasted from 1941 until Morecambe's death in 1984. The duo were a staple of British television, particularly noted for their Christmas specials, which were among the highest-rated shows in British television history.

Early Life

Eric Morecambe was born John Eric Bartholomew in Morecambe, Lancashire. He adopted the stage name Eric Morecambe, taking the name of his hometown. He attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School and began his entertainment career at a young age, performing in local talent shows.

Career

Early Career

Morecambe met Ernie Wise in 1940 when they were both auditioning for the same show. They formed a double act and began performing together in variety shows and music halls. Their early career was interrupted by World War II, during which Morecambe served in the British Army.

Television Success

The duo's big break came in 1954 when they were given their own show, Running Wild, on the BBC. Although the show was not initially successful, it led to further opportunities. In 1961, they began a long association with ITV, where they starred in Two of a Kind and later The Morecambe & Wise Show.

Their move back to the BBC in 1968 marked the beginning of their most successful period. The Morecambe & Wise Show became a national institution, particularly noted for its Christmas specials, which featured guest stars from the world of entertainment, sports, and politics.

Later Years and Death

In 1976, Morecambe suffered a major heart attack, but he returned to work after a period of recovery. The duo continued to perform together until Morecambe's death in 1984. Eric Morecambe died of a heart attack shortly after performing a show in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

Eric Morecambe is remembered as one of the greatest British comedians of all time. His partnership with Ernie Wise is celebrated for its warmth, wit, and enduring appeal. The town of Morecambe has a statue of Eric Morecambe, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999, which has become a popular tourist attraction.

Personal Life

Eric Morecambe married Joan Bartlett in 1952, and they had three children. He was a keen supporter of Luton Town F.C. and often incorporated his love of football into his comedy routines.
