Estriol dipropionate
Estriol dipropionate is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen that is used in hormone therapy. It is a prodrug of estriol, which is a naturally occurring estrogen. Estriol dipropionate is used primarily in the treatment of menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. It is also used in the treatment of osteoporosis and certain types of breast cancer.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Estriol dipropionate is a prodrug of estriol, meaning it is metabolized in the body to produce estriol. Estriol is a weak estrogen, meaning it has less estrogenic activity than other forms of estrogen, such as estradiol. This makes estriol dipropionate a safer option for hormone therapy, as it carries a lower risk of side effects such as blood clots and breast cancer.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Estriol dipropionate is used primarily in the treatment of menopausal symptoms. These can include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. It is also used in the treatment of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle. In addition, estriol dipropionate is used in the treatment of certain types of breast cancer.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medications, estriol dipropionate can cause side effects. These can include nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, and headache. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as blood clots and breast cancer.
