Etta D. Pisano
Etta D. Pisano is an American radiologist and academic administrator, known for her contributions to the field of breast imaging and breast cancer research. She has held numerous leadership positions in academic medicine and has been recognized for her efforts in advancing women in the field of medicine.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Pisano was born and raised in New York City. She completed her undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College, where she majored in mathematics. She then attended Duke University School of Medicine, earning her MD degree. Following medical school, Pisano completed a residency in radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and a fellowship in breast imaging at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Career[edit | edit source]
Pisano has held faculty positions at several institutions, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she served as the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and the Kenan Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering. She was also the founding Chief Scientific Officer at the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN).
Pisano's research has focused on the development and evaluation of new technologies for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. She led the Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (DMIST), a landmark study that compared digital and film mammography.
In 2010, Pisano was appointed as the Dean of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine, becoming the first woman to hold this position. She served in this role until 2014.
Awards and recognition[edit | edit source]
Pisano has received numerous awards for her contributions to medicine and radiology, including the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Women in Medicine and Science Leadership Award. She is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
