Eutocia

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Eutocia is a term used in obstetrics to describe a normal and uncomplicated childbirth. It is characterized by the spontaneous onset of labor, the natural progression of labor without the need for medical intervention, and the delivery of a healthy newborn through the vagina. Eutocia is the opposite of dystocia, which refers to difficult or abnormal labor and delivery.

Stages of Eutocia[edit | edit source]

Eutocia typically involves three stages of labor:

First Stage[edit | edit source]

The first stage of labor begins with the onset of regular uterine contractions and ends with the complete cervical dilation to 10 centimeters. This stage is divided into two phases:

  • Latent Phase: The early part of labor where contractions are mild and irregular, and the cervix begins to efface and dilate.
  • Active Phase: The phase where contractions become more intense, frequent, and regular, leading to rapid cervical dilation.

Second Stage[edit | edit source]

The second stage of labor starts with full cervical dilation and ends with the delivery of the baby. This stage involves the mother actively pushing to help the baby descend through the birth canal.

Third Stage[edit | edit source]

The third stage of labor begins after the baby is born and ends with the delivery of the placenta. This stage is crucial for preventing postpartum hemorrhage and ensuring the complete expulsion of the placenta and membranes.
