Evan Harris
Evan Harris is a British politician and former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Liberal Democrats. He represented the constituency of Oxford West and Abingdon from 1997 to 2010. Harris is known for his work on science policy, human rights, and secularism.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Evan Harris was born on 21 October 1965 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. He attended King Edward VII School in Sheffield. Harris went on to study medicine at Wadham College, Oxford, where he earned his medical degree.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Before entering politics, Harris worked as a junior doctor in Oxford and Liverpool. He specialized in oncology and palliative care. Harris has been a vocal advocate for evidence-based medicine and medical research.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Harris was elected as the MP for Oxford West and Abingdon in the 1997 general election. During his time in Parliament, he served as the Liberal Democrats' spokesperson for science, health, and human rights. He was a member of the Science and Technology Select Committee and played a significant role in debates on stem cell research, abortion, and assisted dying.

Harris is a prominent advocate for secularism and has been involved with organizations such as the British Humanist Association and the National Secular Society. He has campaigned for the separation of church and state and for freedom of speech in scientific research.
