Express Dairies

Express Dairies was a major dairy company in the United Kingdom. It was established in the early 20th century and became one of the largest milk delivery services in the country. The company was known for its extensive network of milkmen who delivered fresh milk and other dairy products directly to customers' doorsteps.

History[edit | edit source]

Express Dairies was founded in 1926. The company quickly expanded its operations, acquiring several smaller dairy businesses and establishing a strong presence in the UK dairy market. By the mid-20th century, Express Dairies had become a household name, synonymous with fresh milk delivery.

In the 1990s, the company underwent significant changes, including a series of mergers and acquisitions. In 1998, Express Dairies merged with Northern Foods, a major food manufacturing company. This merger allowed Express Dairies to expand its product range and distribution network.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Express Dairies operated a fleet of milk floats, which were electric vehicles used for delivering milk. These milk floats became an iconic symbol of the company and were a common sight in residential areas across the UK.

The company offered a wide range of dairy products, including milk, cream, butter, and cheese. In addition to dairy products, Express Dairies also delivered other grocery items such as bread, eggs, and fruit juices.

Decline and Acquisition[edit | edit source]

In the early 2000s, the traditional milk delivery service began to decline due to changes in consumer behavior and the rise of supermarket chains. In 2003, Express Dairies was acquired by Arla Foods, a major international dairy company. The acquisition marked the end of Express Dairies as an independent entity, and its operations were integrated into Arla Foods' existing business.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite its decline, Express Dairies left a lasting legacy in the UK dairy industry. The company's innovative approach to milk delivery and its commitment to quality products set a standard for other dairy companies to follow.
