Faygo

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Faygo is a popular brand of soft drink that originated in the United States. It was founded in Detroit, Michigan, in 1907 by Russian immigrants Ben and Perry Feigenson. The Feigenson brothers initially started their business as a bakery, but they soon transitioned into the beverage industry, using their skills as bakers to create unique soda flavors. Today, Faygo is known for its wide variety of flavors, including classics like root beer and cream soda, as well as more unique offerings like Redpop and Rock & Rye.

History[edit | edit source]

The Feigenson brothers started Faygo in 1907, using frosting recipes from their bakery to create soda flavors. The original flavors were fruit punch, strawberry, and grape, which were based on their cake frosting recipes. The company was originally named Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works, but the name was shortened to Faygo in 1921 to make it easier to print on bottles.

In the 1950s, Faygo expanded its distribution beyond Michigan. The company began advertising on television and introduced a series of memorable marketing campaigns. One of the most famous was the "Faygo Boat Song," which became a popular jingle in the Midwest.

In 1987, Faygo was purchased by the National Beverage Corporation, which also owns brands like LaCroix Water and Shasta. Despite the change in ownership, Faygo continues to operate in Detroit and its sodas are still made with the original recipes.

Products[edit | edit source]

Faygo offers more than 50 flavors of soda. Some of the most popular include Redpop, a strawberry-flavored soda, and Rock & Rye, a cream soda with a hint of cherry flavor. Other notable flavors include Moon Mist, a lemon-lime soda similar to Mountain Dew, and Candy Apple, a sweet apple-flavored soda.

Faygo is also known for its diet line of sodas, which includes flavors like Diet Grape and Diet Chocolate Cream Pie. The company also produces a line of carbonated waters and flavored seltzers.

In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]

Faygo has a significant cultural presence, particularly in the Midwest. It is famously associated with the Insane Clown Posse, a hip hop duo from Detroit who often reference Faygo in their songs and spray their concert audiences with the soda.
