Fellatio
Fellatio is a form of oral sex that involves a person stimulating the penis of another person by using the mouth, throat, or both. Oral sex can also involve the use of the tongue and teeth, and is usually performed for sexual pleasure.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The term fellatio comes from the Latin word fellātus, past participle of fellāre, meaning to suck. In fellatio the sex partner can be of any gender.
Health aspects[edit | edit source]
Physical aspects[edit | edit source]
The essential aspect of fellatio is for a man's sex partner to take his penis into their mouth, and then move their mouth smoothly up and down the penis to a rhythm set by them mimicking the thrusting motion of vaginal sex, and to a lesser extent anal sex. The man's partner may also orally play with his penis by licking, sucking, kissing or otherwise playing with the tongue and lips.
Psychological aspects[edit | edit source]
Fellatio can be sexually arousing for both participants, and may lead to orgasm for the man. It is physically possible for men who have sufficient flexibility, penis size or a combination of the two, to perform fellatio on themselves as a form of masturbation, this is called autofellatio.
Health risks[edit | edit source]
Fellatio is riskier than non-penetrative sex in terms of STDs. Some diseases that can be transmitted by contact with bodily fluids include HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and human papillomavirus (HPV). However, the risk is significantly lower than that of vaginal or anal sex.
Cultural views[edit | edit source]
Fellatio is sometimes considered a taboo, with many societies considering it degrading or unclean. However, it is also commonly practiced by adults, both as a part of foreplay and as a non-penetrative form of sexual activity.
Legal and cultural aspects[edit | edit source]
In some cultures, fellatio is illegal. In others, it is seen as not only a physically pleasurable act for the participants, but also a profound expression of love and respect.
