A flexor muscle is a type of muscle that decreases the angle between two bones at a joint. They are opposed by extensor muscles, which increase this angle. Flexor muscles are found in various parts of the body, including the hand, forearm, and leg.

Structure[edit | edit source]

Flexor muscles are typically located on the ventral or anterior side of the body. For example, in the forearm, the flexor muscles are located on the anterior side, while the extensor muscles are on the posterior side.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of a flexor muscle is to flex a joint, or in other words, to bring two bones closer together. This action is opposed by an extensor muscle, which extends the joint and brings the two bones further apart.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Injuries to flexor muscles, such as strains and tears, are common in athletes and can result in significant pain and disability. Treatment typically involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery.
