Franklin County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 23,424. The county seat is Carnesville. Franklin County was established on February 25, 1784, and is named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
History[edit | edit source]
Franklin County was created from lands ceded by the Cherokee and Creek peoples. It was one of the original counties of Georgia, and its boundaries have changed several times since its creation. The county played a role in the early development of the state and was a site of agricultural and industrial growth in the 19th century.
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, Franklin County has a total area of 266 square miles (690 km²), of which 261 square miles (680 km²) is land and 5.2 square miles (13 km²) (2.0%) is water. The county is part of the Piedmont region, characterized by rolling hills and valleys.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 23,424 people, 8,900 households, and 6,400 families residing in the county. The population density was 90 people per square mile (35/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with African American, Native American, Asian, and Hispanic or Latino communities also present.
Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Franklin County is diverse, with agriculture, manufacturing, and services playing significant roles. The county is known for its poultry and cattle farming, as well as its textile and manufacturing industries.
Education[edit | edit source]
Franklin County is served by the Franklin County School District, which includes several elementary schools, a middle school, and Franklin County High School. The county also has access to higher education institutions in nearby counties, such as University of Georgia in Athens.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Major highways that pass through Franklin County include Interstate 85, U.S. Route 29, and Georgia State Route 17. These routes provide access to major cities such as Atlanta and Greenville.
